Age of Wonders 3 is Turn-Based Strategy Game from Triumph Studios.
AoW3 is set in a rather high-fantasy setting. My main role was Creature and Character Artist.
The position had the full creation pipeline, from designs and concepts to the final textured in-game models.
The Eldritch Horror
A fearsome extra-dimensional entity. The First shot is in the extra-dimensional Marmoset Toolbag 2.
One of my favourite creatures to design and create.
The Eldritch has a low poly cage around him with additive texture and uv animation, to give him a moving glow and make him look super magic. (when in doubt, add uv animated glow)
The Eldritch Horror has 10k tris and has multiple 1024px*1024px texture maps.
This noble and just Dragon was the last one on my list of the dragon family.
The Golden Dragon had to feel like the King of Dragons.
I decided to give him a set of wide golden plates, to achieve a 'tanky' look. Horns resembling a Laurel Wreath and rubies growing out of it's armor made him more majestic.
The Golden Dragon has 6500 tris and has multiple 1024px*1024px texture maps.
The first units I got to tackle were the dragons.
The initial idea was to just give them different textures, but the dragons became more important storywise.
I like dragons, so it made me quite happy that I had a bigger timeframe to give them more different looks.
The models are between 7k and 9k tris and have multiple 1024px*1024px texture maps, diffuse, specular, reflection, normal and sometimes glow and alpha.
The Beholder is the third or fourth character I made for Age of Wonders 3.
This magical unit was done in between the dragons, was pretty nice to start on something that wasn't winged and scaley. Haha.
It (He?) was a real blast to create and pushed me to experiment with the inhouse shaders to get his gooeyness to the max.
His brain even floops around!
(Also, his eye pops out in one of his idles, pretty nasty good)
The Kraken is the first waterbased creature we added to Age of Wonders 3, so it was really exciting to explore all the different aspects that joined this challenge.
One of the things was the watershaders, as they were still creating it, and how much it altered the look of the units on World and Combat map point of view.
It was also nice to be on board with the meetings on the aquatic battles from the start.
The Kraken has around 11K tris and 1K texture maps.
A bunch of different unsorted creatures.
The first bunch are the Wyverns, smaller mountable cousins of the dragons. The sculpt of the Golden Wyvern was later posed and printed for the Collectors Edition Statue.
The next ones are the snakes, Shock Serpent and the babies.
There's also a lineup of all the creatures, there are some other monsters I got my hands one during the internship, but these are the I did from start to finish.
Warbeetles and Raptors are usable as mounts.
The Elementals are magical creatures build from pieces of environment and armour. When they are defeated they explode and turn into a rubble. It's pretty sweet.
Hunter Spiders - Queen and Babies
Hunter Spiders are quick and agile units that are very dangerous in packs. The Queen of the Hunter Spiders has bright and vibrant colors whereas the others have darker tones.
The Hunter Spider Queen has around 5850 tris and 1k texture maps.
